System Performance is Slow (Desktop Systems)
Your
overall system performance is affected by many different variables. But system performance
usually falls into two categories: hardware and software configuration.
HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
Performance is optimum when your PC configuration includes the recommended amount of processing power and memory for the particular operating system you are running. For example, if you have Windows NT 4.0 on a Pentium class system with only 32MB of RAM, don't expect good performance when running multiple applications. Likewise, as a baseline, a Celeron/366 system with 64MB of RAM should give you excellent performance in Windows 98 and acceptable performance in Windows NT.
Besides your processor speed and memory, two other hardware components are critical to the overall system performance: video and disk subsystem. Using a PCI video card in a Pentium III/450 is not a good idea, because the bottleneck will be the video card itself. Likewise, using IDE drives in a heavily used server is not recommended.
RECOMMENDED CONFIGURATIONS
For
Windows 98/98SE:
Celeron/366 or faster
64MB of memory recommended
ATA33 4.0GB IDE HDD or better
Any AGP based video card
For
Windows NT 4.0 workstation:
Celeron/433 or faster
Minimum 64MB of memory; 128MB highly recommended
ATA33 6.0GB IDE HDD or better; SCSI recommended for performance
Any AGP based video card with minimum 4MB memory
These recommendations are for desktop systems only. For servers running Windows NT 4.0 Server, the recommended memory is 128MB. Always use SCSI drives for servers, never use IDE.
SOFTWARE CONFIGURATIONS
The fastest hardware does not guarantee you a fast performing system, unless it is configured properly. It's crucial that you're using the most updated driver for all of your devices. This is especially true for your video card. Click here for a list of video card drivers available from Premio.
In
addition, make sure you are using the latest version of the operating system
with the appropriate update or service pack.
