PREMIO Troubleshooting Guide
Modem (ISA)

Jump to the self-diagnostic flowchart, or select the specific problem you're having with your modem:

My modem doesn't appear in Windows 9x Device Manager.
I'm not getting a dialtone from my modem.
I can't connect to my internet service provider (ISP).
I'm getting a port error when performing a self-diagnostic.
How do I install an ISA PnP modem in Windows NT?

MY MODEM DOES NOT APPEAR IN WINDOWS 9X DEVICE MANAGER
1. If you have an ISA plug and play (PnP) modem, make sure it is configured for PnP mode, not legacy mode. (Refer to your modem manual for more instructions.)
2. Then go into the BIOS setup and make sure serial port 2 or COM2 is disabled. If you're using Windows 9x, make sure the PnP option in the BIOS is set to enabled or yes. Set it to no or disabled if you're using Windows NT instead.
3. For Windows 9x, start the system in normal mode and 9x should auto-detect the modem and ask you for the drivers. Click
here for a list of PREMIO ISA PnP modems.
4. If 9x does not detect the modem, go into Device Manager (right click on My Computer / Properties / Device Manager tab). Look under Other Devices or Unsupported Devices and see if a modem is listed in there; if it is remove it and restart 9x.

I'M NOT GETTING A DIALTONE FROM MY MODEM
1. There are two phone jacks in the back of the modem: one for the phone line, and the other for your telephone. Make sure you did not reverse the connector on those two ports!
2. Also, connect a telephone directly to the phone line and make sure you hear a dial tone. If you're using the modem in an office environment, check to make sure the phone line you're using support a data call. Most offices with a PBX (public branch exchange) system have phone lines that only support voice calls.

I CAN'T CONNECT TO MY INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP)
1. If your modem is configured correctly and you can dial out, then mostly likely the problem is between the modem and your ISP.
2. Call your ISP's technical support and see if they can help you with the problem. To connect to an ISP, you'll have to manually setup the TCP/IP protocol and the correct ISP DNS IP addresses in the Dial Up Networking section.
3. If you are not familiar with those terms and settings, your local ISP support rep should be able to work you through each of the necessary settings.

I'M GETTING A PORT ERROR WHEN PERFORMING A SELF-DIAGNOSTIC
1. If you have an ISA modem, it should be set to COM2. Go into your BIOS setup and make sure COM2 or serial port B is disabled under integrated peripherals. Also, make sure Plug and Play OS support is set to yes or enabled.
2. Next, go into Device Manager (right click on My Computer / Properties / Device Manager tab) and double click on Modem. Your modem should be listed under this entry. Double-click on your modem and you should see a Resources tab associated with your modem. If the Resources tab is not present, then most likely you're loading the wrong modem driver.
3. If the problem still persists, restart your system and go into Safe Mode (hit F8 when Windows 9x starts) and go to Device Manager. Double click on Ports (COM & LPT) and remove all the entries that read Communication port (COMx). Then restart your system in Normal mode.

HOW DO I INSTALL AN ISA PNP MODEM IN WINDOWS NT?
1. Configure your ISA modem for plug and play mode of operation. Refer to your modem manual for instructions.
2. Go into your system BIOS setup and set plug and play OS support to NO or DISABLED. Also, disable COM2 or serial port B from the integrated peripherals setup menu.
3. Start Windows NT and login as the administrator; you must login as the administrator to add or change any new hardware on a NT system.
4. Go to Control Panel / Modem and let NT autodetect the modem. It should find your modem on COM2.
5. Finally, click on the "Have Disk" button and insert the Windows 9x modem driver to complete the installation.

CONFIGURE MODEM FOR PLUG AND PLAY (PNP) MODE
1. If you're using Windows 9x, you must configure your ISA modem for plug and play mode of operation, before installing the modem into your system.
2. Consult your modem user's manual on how to setup the modem for plug and play mode.

GO INTO SYSTEM BIOS SETUP AND DISABLE COM2
1. It's best to configure your modem for COM2 or serial port 2.
2. To do this, go into your system board BIOS setup (hit the DELETE key during the system memory count). Then go to Peripheral Setup or Integrated Peripheral and look for an option that reads COM2 or serial port 2. Set this option to DISABLED.
3. Save the BIOS setting and exit.

MAKE SURE PnP IS ENABLED IN THE BIOS AND CHECK DEVICE MANAGER
1. If Windows 9x fails to detect your modem at startup, then check to make sure the Plug and Play option is set to YES or ENABLED in the system board BIOS.
2. To do this, go into your system board BIOS setup (hit the DELETE key during the system memory count). Then go to PCI/PnP Configuration for Award BIOS, and set the PnP OS option to YES.
3. Save the BIOS setting and exit.
4. Additionally, go into Windows 9x Device Manager and check to make sure the modem is not listed under Unsupported Device or Other Device. If the modem is listed there, you must remove it and restart the system.

PERFORM MODEM SELF DIAGNOSTIC TEST
1. Once you have properly installed the modem driver, you can test the modem to see if it works.
2. Go into Control Panel / Modem and click on the Diagnostic tab. Your modem should be listed as COM2 under the Port column. Highlight it and click on the More info... button.
3. If you get a status window then your modem is properly configured and ready for use.

GO INTO SAFE MODE AND REMOVE ALL PORTS
1. To get into Safe Mode, hold down the CNTRL key during startup for Windows 98, or keep hitting the F8 key during startup for both Windows 95 or 98.
2. At the startup menu, select Safe Mode. Once you're in the desktop screen, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Then select the Device Manager tab.
