-- Intel 820 MTH Issue FAQ --
Posted May 10, 2000

What's the problem?
Intel has found problems with some motherboards using the
Intel 820 chipset with SDRAM. (The Intel 820 chipset was originally developed for Rambus or RDRAM only.) The issue lies with the memory translator hub (MTH). The problem is caused by the hub being sensitive to board/system noise cause by the simultaneous switching of signals on the MTH buses. Symptoms of this problem include intermittent system reboots or system hangs during operation. PREMIO 820S systems are the only PREMIO systems affected by this problem. To determine if you have an 820S system, please click here. For more details, please visit Intel website.

I have an 820S board, what can I do?
If you have not experienced any problems, your system is probably not affected and should continue to function properly. Also, rest assured, you are covered by a three year warranty, so if any problems should occur during that time period, we will replace the motherboard per the terms of the warranty. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our Help Desk at 1-800-568-6388 (weekdays from 7:30AM-6:00PM PST).

How can I replace the 820S?
Premio is offering to replace your 820S board with the PREMIO V93T board, which is based on the VIA Apollo Pro 133 (VIA 693X) chipset.

What are the differences between the 820S and V93T?
The table below lists the differences between the two motherboards.

FEATURES 820S V93T
CPU Type Slot 1/SECC2 Slot 1/SECC2
Number of PCI Slots Five Five
Number of ISA Slots One Two
AGP Slot One 2X/4X One 2X
Number of DIMM Slots Three Three
ECC Memory Support No Yes
Maximum Memory 512MB 1.5GB
DIMM Speed Supported PC100 PC100/133
IDE Support ATA/66 ATA/66
Integrated Sound ADI SoundMAX None

The V93T is only capable of AGP 2X, what do I lose?
AGP 4X is primarily used for 3D games only. It allows for faster transfer of texture between the system board and AGP video card. So unless you're using it solely as a gaming system, there will be little or no impact on video performance.

I have an ATA/66 hard drive, will it be supported by the V93T?
Yes, the V93T board also comes with two ATA/66 IDE channels.

I'm using the 820S onboard sound, but the V93T doesn't have onboard sound.
We will add an additional PCI soundcard (equivalent or better than the 820S ADI SoundMAX) to compensate.

I have a 133MHz FSB CPU, but I am using PC100 SDRAM DIMM.
The V93T is able to run the memory bus at 100MHz, while running the CPU Host bus at 133MHz. Therefore, you do not need to replace your PC100 SDRAM DIMM.

Who do I contact for the replacement?
Please call our Help Desk at 1-800-568-6388 (weekdays from 7:30AM-6:00PM PST), and have your system serial number ready. It's located on the back of your system, where you plug the power cord into. It's on a white barcode sticker starting with 20000xxxxx.

My 820S is working fine, but I'd still like to replace it with the V93T.
If your 820S is functioning normally, we strongly recommend that you do NOT replace the system board. Replacing a system board is a major undertaking that should be performed only if you have problems. Most likely, your 820S board isn't affected by the Intel MTH issue.

The V93T is not an acceptable solution for me.
Please call our Help Desk at 1-800-568-6388 (weekdays from 7:30AM-6:00PM PST) for further assistance.
