3Com 3C90x Series

  • Windows NT 4.0:
  • Windows 95: If you can't install the driver, go into Device Manager and check Other Devices. If there's a PCI Ethernet Controller entry present, remove it, and restart the system. 95 will find the 3Com card and ask you for the drivers.

  • Windows 95: If you see the message "Windows Protection Error: You need to restart your computer" at bootup, then you need to upgrade to the version 3.10 drivers (1.2MB; extract with -D). This problem is detailed in 3Com's technote at: http://support.3com.com/infodeli/inotes/techtran/d5fe_5ea.htm

  • Windows 98: After restarting 98, you can't log onto the network anymore, and Device Manager shows a yellow ! for your 3Com adapter. To fix this, go to Device Manager / System Devices / PCI Bus / IRQ Steering. Under the Use IRQ Steering options, uncheck everything except the third one, "Get IRQ table from Protected Mode PCIBIOS 2.1 call." Restart Windows 98. 3Com 3C5x9 Series
  • Windows NT: Follow these steps to install the NT driver:
    • Boot from a DOS 6.22 or Windows 95 disk and run 3C5X9CFG.EXE on the 3Com driver disk. Make sure plug and plug is disabled and set I/O address to 300h and IRQ to 10.
    • Go into the system board BIOS and go to PCI/PnP Configuration. Disable the PnP OS option. Set "Resource Controlled By" to manual. Set IRQ 10 to Legacy/ISA.
    • Logon to NT as the administrator and add the 3Com EtherLink III ISA/PCMCIA adapter. Configure it for ISA bus, I/O address 300h and IRQ to 10.

    Kingston EtherRx KNE100

  • Windows NT 4.0:
    • You must have a network cable plugged into the Kingston card, or else you will get an event error message.
