Intel Pentium III Katmai/Coppermine Slot 1 Performance Comparison
page 3 of 3
From
the testing data, it's clear that the Coppermine CPU outperforms the Katmai CPU.
Let's take a closer look by comparing these two CPUs side by side at the
same clock speed.
The
graph above shows the Winstone 99 (both 98SE and NT) performance level of
both CPUs running at 500MHz. The blue graph represents the Katmai, while
the light green graph is for the Coppermine. In 98SE, the Coppermine is faster
than the Katmai. For the scale of Winstone 99, 1.0 or higher means there's
significant performance improvement. Under NT, the Coppermine still manages
to edge out the Katmai, albeit by a smaller margin.
And
lastly, the graph above shows the Winstone 99 (both 98SE and NT) performance level of
both CPUs running at 600MHz, which is the highest Katmai speed. The story
is the same: the Coppermine outperforms the Katmai at the same clock speed.
In
conclusion, is the Coppermine a worthy successor to the Katmai? Based on
the testing data, the answer is yes. Besides the performance enhancements,
thanks to its 0.18 micron technology, the Coppermine is able to scale
beyond 600MHz. Look for Pentium III Coppermine processors running at 800MHz
or higher to be widely available by Q1/2000.
