    Hardware Questions

I have an IDE LS-120 floppy drive; how do I configure it in the BIOS?

  • If you do not have a regular 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive installed, then go into the BIOS, Standard CMOS Setup, and set "Floppy Drive A:" to Not Installed.
  • Next, also in Standard CMOS Setup, you need to set the drive type to FLOPTICAL. For example, if the LS-120 drive is installed on the secondary IDE channel as a slave device, then set the Sec Slave option in the BIOS to FLOPTICAL.

I've just changed my processor and now I get no video when I turn on the system.

  • You need to set the CPU Ratio to the lowest setting of 2X.
  • Do this by putting a jumper on JP3; see system board diagram below.

I'm trying to install a Celeron processor, but I'm getting no video.

  • The Intel 820 chipset does not support 66MHz front side bus.
  • If you want to use a Celeron, make sure its FSB is 100MHz.

How do I install an AMR soft modem?

  • Go into the BIOS and select the Peripheral Setup menu.
  • Make sure the Onboard AC'97 modem option is set to enabled.
  • Then follow the AMR manufacturer's instructions to install the driver.

How do I disable the onboard audio?

  • Go into the BIOS and select the Peripheral Setup menu.
  • Make sure the Onboard audio option is set to DISABLED.

How do I enable the UltraDMA/66 IDE support?

  • You need an IDE HDD that is UltraDMA/66 compliant.
  • In addition, make sure the IDE cable (40 pin, 80 conduct) you're using is also UltraDMA/66 compliant.

My HDD is not UltraDMA/66, can I still use it?

  • Yes, the onboard IDE controller is downwardly compatible with PIO, DMA, or UltraDMA/33 HDDs.

I've turned the system on, but I'm getting no power (i.e., power supply fan does not spin).

  • Make sure the cable from the case's power switch is connected properly to the board's power on jumper; refer to the motherboard manual.
  • Try reseating the ATX power connector to the motherboard.
  • Disconnect all the power connectors to your HDD, FDD, CD-ROM, etc. then try powering the system up.
  • Try replacing the ATX power supply.

I have two USB ports in the back, how do I enable them?

  • Windows NT 4.0 currently do not support USB.
  • Windows 98 or Windows 2000 comes with native USB drivers.

What kind of DIMMs should I use?

  • The motherboard only accepts PC100, unbuffered, 3.3V SDRAM DIMM ONLY!

Do I need to use PC133 SDRAM DIMM?

  • No, the SDRAM bus (the bus between the memory and the i820 chipset) is always 100MHz.
  • The front side bus or host bus (the bus between the i820 chipset and the processor) runs at either 100MHz or 133MHz, depending on which CPU you have installed.

Can I use just one DIMM?

  • Yes, but make sure the DIMM is installed in DIMM slot 1.

What is the system's maximum memory capacity?

  • It is 512MB using two registered 256MB DIMMs.

Does the system support ECC memory?

  • No, you cannot use ECC SDRAM with the system board. Use only non-ECC SDRAM, otherwise you may get system memory errors with ECC SDRAM.

Can I use all three DIMM slots?

  • Yes, but you need to follow the rules below.

I am installing more than one DIMM, what rules do I need to follow?

  • For two double-sided (DS) DIMMs: Install the larger DIMM in DIMM slot 1; install the second DS DIMM in either DIMM slot 2 or 3.
  • For three double-sided (DS) DIMMs: The system board does NOT support three DS DIMMs, even though there are three DIMM slot present; DIMM slot 2 and 3 is actually a shared DIMM slot.
  • For three DIMMs (one DS DIMM and two single-sided (SS) DIMM): Install the
  • For three DIMMs (one DS DIMM and two single-sided (SS) DIMM): Install the DS DIMM in DIMM slot 1; install the other two SS DIMM in DIMM slot 2 and 3.
  • For three SS DIMMs: Install the largest SS DIMM in DIMM slot 1, follow by next largest one in DIMM slot 2, and the last SS DIMM in DIMM slot 3.

    Processor Settings
There are no physical jumpers or DIP switches to set for the processor speed; it is set in the BIOS using the following CPU ratio selection (see the table below).

To get into the BIOS, keep hitting the DELETE key during the memory count screen. Then go into the Hardware Monitor setup. Two options control the speed of the CPU: CPU Ratio Selection and CPU Host Clock (MHz). For most processors, you should set CPU Host Clock (MHz) to Auto; the BIOS will auto detect the CPU host clock as 100MHz or 133MHz. All you need to do is set the CPU Ratio Selection accordingly.

If you set the CPU Ratio Selection too high, then you must close JP3 to set it back to 2X, so you can get back into the BIOS.
